Midjourney Just Dropped a Sneak Peek of What's Coming Next — Here's How to Test It Right Now

If you follow along with me here on Sylt.ing, you know I get genuinely excited when a creative tool lets us peek behind the curtain. And Midjourney just did something that made me do a little happy dance in my chair. On June 16, they quietly rolled out a way for anyone to test early versions of new models — right now, today, without waiting for a big launch event.

I've been experimenting with it all week and I have to tell you, this is the most fun I've had with Midjourney since V8 first dropped. So let me break down exactly what's new and how you can start playing with it yourself.

First up: Draft Mode Is a Game-Changer for Experimenting

Before we get to the sneak peek part, let me tell you about draft mode, because this is the foundation that makes the whole thing work so beautifully. Midjourney added a draft mode for V8.1 that lets you generate 24 images at once — at a lower resolution, yes, but honestly the quality is still impressive for drafts.

Here's why I love this: instead of carefully crafting one prompt and waiting for four images, you can throw out a dozen ideas and see what sticks. You know that feeling when you're brainstorming and you just want to see where a random idea goes without burning through your fast hours? Draft mode is exactly that.

To turn it on, just click the little ⚡ button in the menu bar. Each draft job uses half the fast hours of a regular V8.1 SD job, even though you get 24 images out of it. That's an incredible deal for anyone who likes to experiment the way I do.

When you see something you like, just click "Vary" and it'll render that image at full resolution and quality. Simple as that.

But Here's the Really Exciting Part: The --preview Parameter

This is what I've been dying to tell you about. Midjourney introduced the --preview parameter, and it's basically an invitation to test drive whatever they're cooking up next. You just add --preview to your prompt, and the model switches to the latest experimental version.

Now, they're upfront that these images might be a little unpolished, and the jobs aren't guaranteed to run consistently every time. But honestly? That's part of the charm. You're seeing something that's still being shaped, still evolving. It feels like being in the room while the team is working on something new.

I've noticed that the preview model handles personalization and moodboards differently than V8.1. The results feel fresher, looser, more surprising. Some of my tests came out with this lovely painterly quality that I haven't seen in the standard model. Other times, the composition was totally unexpected in the best way.

How to Get Started With --preview Today

If you're ready to try this yourself — and I really think you should — here's exactly what to do:

Step 1: Open Midjourney on the web interface and make sure you're on V8.1 (it's the default as of June 10).

Step 2: Write a prompt for something you've been wanting to create. Maybe it's a character design, a dreamy landscape, or a brand mood board. Any style works.

Step 3: Add --preview at the end of your prompt. Something like: a cozy bookshop interior with warm lighting, floating lanterns, magical atmosphere --preview

Step 4: I recommend combining this with draft mode. Click that ⚡ button, add --preview, and let it generate 24 variations. You'll get a massive spread of ideas to pull from, all using the experimental model.

Step 5: When you find something you love, hit "Vary" to render it at full quality. Then share what you made — I'd love to see it!

What This Tells Us About Where Midjourney Is Headed

For me, the most exciting thing about the --preview parameter isn't just the cool images you can make today. It's what it signals about Midjourney's philosophy. They're opening up their development process and letting the community play with unfinished ideas. That takes confidence, and it creates a really special relationship between the creators and the people using their tool.

The preview model is giving us a glimpse into where V8.2 might go — better personalization, more coherent complex scenes, and that extra spark that makes you go "whoa, how did it do that?" I've been testing it alongside regular V8.1 and the differences are subtle but real. The preview model feels more responsive to detailed prompts, and it handles moodboard references with a nuance I haven't seen before.

Go Play, Go Experiment, Go Create

That's really what all of this comes down to, isn't it? Tools like Midjourney keep getting more powerful, but the magic happens when you sit down and make something. The --preview parameter is just an open door — you still have to walk through it with your ideas, your curiosity, your willingness to try something and see what happens.

So here's my challenge to you: this week, open Midjourney, flip on draft mode, add --preview to a prompt, and just see where it takes you. Don't worry about making something perfect. Worry about making something that surprises you.

And if you create something you're proud of, drop a link in the comments or tag me. I genuinely want to see what you come up with. There's nothing better than watching this community inspire each other.

Until next time — keep creating, keep exploring, and never stop being curious about what these tools can do.
