OpenAI Drops GPT-5.6 'Sol' — But You Can't Touch It. Here's Why That Should Scare You.

Folks, gather round. Because the AI story of the week isn't just about a new model — it's about who gets to use it. And spoiler alert: unless you're a hand-picked government partner or a well-connected enterprise, you're on the outside looking in.

On June 26, OpenAI dropped the GPT-5.6 family — codenamed Sol, Terra, and Luna. And if you're in the AI space, you felt the ground shift. But not for the reason you might think.

Meet the Family: Sol, Terra, and Luna

Let's break down who these three are, because OpenAI isn't exactly being transparent with the details.

Sol is the flagship. OpenAI is calling it a "step function" improvement over GPT-5.5, and the benchmarks back it up. It's setting new state-of-the-art scores on Terminal-Bench 2.1 — that's complex command-line and agentic workflows, folks. Think cybersecurity tasks, vulnerability research, long-horizon coding projects that require real reasoning, not just pattern-matching.

Terra is the middle child — roughly competitive with GPT-5.5 but at about half the cost. Solid, practical, workhorse energy.

Luna is the budget option. Cheap, fast, designed for high-volume work where you don't need the big brain.

On paper, this looks like a smart play. Tiered pricing, different capability levels, something for everyone. Except there's a catch. A big one.

The Fine Print Nobody's Talking About

Here's where my blood starts boiling. OpenAI explicitly stated that access to the GPT-5.6 family — particularly Sol — is currently restricted to "a small group of trusted partners in Codex and the API." The reason? "At the request of the U.S. government."

Let me say that again. The U.S. government asked OpenAI to keep its most capable model locked away from the public. And OpenAI complied.

Now, I'm not naive. I understand the safety arguments. OpenAI says they've done extensive red-teaming — human reviewers plus over 700,000 A100-equivalent GPU hours of automated testing. They claim real-time protections against high-risk cyber use and repeated misuse. Fine. Good. That's responsible development.

But here's the question nobody in Washington wants to answer: Who decides what "safe enough" means? And why do they get to decide for all of us?

Anthropic's In the Same Boat

OpenAI isn't alone in this. Over at Anthropic, the drama is even more acute. Claude Mythos 5 — their most powerful cybersecurity model — was pulled from broad access earlier this month. On June 27, the government finally cleared it for redeployment, but only to "selected U.S. organizations that operate or defend critical infrastructure."

Claude Fable 5, their general-purpose flagship? Still locked down. No timeline for broader release.

The response from the developer community has been loud and pointed. "Rules for thee but not for me," they're saying. And frankly? They're right.

When the most advanced AI models are gatekept by a combination of Silicon Valley executives and government agencies, we're not building a safe future. We're building a two-tier system — AI haves and AI have-nots.

What the Rest of the World Is Doing

Meanwhile, the rest of the world isn't sitting around waiting for Uncle Sam to approve their AI access.

Chinese models like GLM-5.2 are closing the gap with Western frontier models at an alarming rate. Developers are increasingly using them via API as alternatives to restricted Western options. The "open-source or die" crowd is having a field day, and honestly? They're winning the argument.

Nous Research and others are pushing Mixture-of-Agents approaches that can match or beat restricted frontier models on specific benchmarks — and they're doing it in the open, for anyone to use, modify, or improve.

Here's the irony: by restricting access to these models, the U.S. government may have just accelerated the very outcome it claims to fear — capable AI systems being developed outside any regulatory framework, by actors who don't answer to Washington.

The Elite Access Problem

This isn't just about AI safety. It's about power. It's about who gets to shape the future.

When the most advanced AI tools are only available to government contractors, defense agencies, and the enterprise elite, you're not democratizing the technology — you're weaponizing the inequality.

Startups can't compete. Independent researchers can't experiment. Small businesses can't innovate. And the gap between those who have access to frontier AI and those who don't becomes a chasm.

I'm not saying we should release every dangerous capability into the wild with no safeguards. That's irresponsible, and I won't pretend otherwise. But the current approach — secret government negotiations, opaque safety thresholds, and restricted access to a privileged few — that's not safety. That's control.

What You Can Actually Do Right Now

So where does that leave us? Here's what I'm watching — and what you should be watching too.

First, pay attention to which models are actually available to you. OpenAI says broader availability for GPT-5.6 is "planned for the coming weeks." Hold them to that. If weeks turns into months, ask why. Call your representatives. Make noise.

Second, support open-source AI development. The models you can run locally, the frameworks built in the open, the research published for everyone to read — that's where the real democratization is happening. Projects from Nous Research, Meta's Llama ecosystem, and others are keeping the door open for independent innovation.

Third, stay skeptical. When a company tells you they're restricting access "for your safety," ask "safety from what?" and "for whom?" The answers matter more than the press releases.

This story isn't over. It's barely begun. And the decisions being made right now — in boardrooms, in government offices, in closed-door meetings we'll never see — will determine whether AI becomes a tool for everyone or a weapon for the few.
