AI Billionaires Launch Ad Blitz to Sell Data Centers to an Angry Public

Here’s the thing about the multimillion-dollar ad blitz from Build American AI: the ads are bought with money from AI companies, they’re airing on networks powered by data centers, and they’re asking you to accept the physical reality of the machines that make the ads possible. That’s not a paradox. That’s a business model under threat. And when a business model is under threat, the people running it don’t build better infrastructure — they buy better PR. I have run servers and built businesses. Let’s talk about what’s actually happening.

What Build American AI Actually Is

Build American AI is not a grassroots movement. It’s a front for an industry that has suddenly realized the American public can see the concrete, hear the diesel generators, and watch their water bills climb. The group is backed by Leading the Future, a pro-AI super PAC whose funders include Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, and OpenAI president Greg Brockman. Filings reviewed by Bloomberg show the affiliated network has raised at least $100 million, with tens of millions earmarked for ads, grassroots work, and public education. That’s not a civic organization. That’s a war chest.

The group’s own statement says the stakes are too high to let ‘the loudest and most extreme voices’ dictate America’s future — and frames opponents as believing foreign misinformation. Convenient framing. It lets them dismiss every farmer, town council member, and ratepayer who has read their electric bill as a dupe. I’ve been in rooms with these people. They don’t believe the opposition is misinformed — they believe it’s inconvenient.

The Backlash in Numbers

Let’s put the numbers on the table. A University of Pennsylvania Annenberg Public Policy Center survey found 61 percent of US adults oppose new data centers in their backyards — up 12 points from a spring survey. Gallup and Reuters/Ipsos polls put opposition near 70 percent. That’s not a fringe movement. That’s a supermajority of the American public telling the richest companies on Earth to build somewhere else.

And they’re organizing. More than 525,000 Americans now belong to over 430 local opposition groups on Facebook, up from 268 groups earlier in the year. That’s a doubling of organized resistance in under twelve months. Data Center Watch counts 75 projects worth roughly $130 billion blocked or delayed in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Total disrupted investment has passed $170 billion. One hundred and seventy billion dollars of planned infrastructure is sitting in permitting purgatory because people don’t want it. That’s not NIMBYism. That’s a national referendum.

Why Even Republicans Are Running

Here’s the tell that this has moved beyond a local nuisance: the GOP is running away. An NRSC memo warned that supporting data centers is now toxic for local politicians. That’s a strategic document from the party’s Senate arm telling its own candidates to keep their distance from the industry. In Ohio, Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown has made the issue central against Republican Senator Jon Husted. In a state Trump won twice, a Democrat is using data centers as a wedge against an incumbent Republican. That tells you everything.

Texas has paused approvals. New York has a moratorium on hyperscale data centers. Cities from Austin to Jersey City have imposed outright bans. And then there’s Trump, who jumped in with a Truth Social post telling resisting communities they risk ending up ‘backwards and poor’ and urging them to ‘let Data Reign.’ That post is a gift to every Democrat running in a swing district. You want to hand your opponent a quote that makes you look like a tool of Silicon Valley? That’s the quote. When your public case rests on a former president’s social media rants, you don’t have a strategy — you have a Hail Mary.

The Playbook Is Old News

None of this is new. The industry has been trying to rebrand itself for years, and the playbook is tired. Meta spent more than $6 million on TV ads in late 2025, trying to convince people that a hyperscale facility is a good neighbor. Oracle ran a charm offensive in New Mexico for its Project Jupiter campus, complete with town halls and promises of local hiring. In Virginia, the industry ran Christmas ads — actual Christmas ads — wrapping data centers in holiday cheer. It didn’t work then, and it won’t work now.

You cannot advertise your way out of a physics problem. A data center is a building that consumes as much electricity as a small city, uses millions of gallons of water for cooling, and generates noise and heat that residents can feel. No 30-second spot is going to change the fact that the substation down the road is now serving a server farm instead of a school. I’ve built hosting businesses — I know what these facilities require. The industry’s answer to every objection is a bigger check to a media buyer. That’s not engagement. That’s evasion.

What This Means: The Ads Are Not the Story

The story is not that Build American AI is spending millions on ads. The story is that they have to. When an industry that has never lacked for capital starts spending eight figures on public sentiment, it means the sentiment has already turned against them. The Annenberg numbers, the Gallup numbers, the 430 Facebook groups — those are the story. The ads are the symptom.

And the ads are not aimed at the people who already oppose data centers. They’re aimed at the undecided — the voters in Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin who are just starting to hear about the ones coming. The industry is trying to get ahead of the curve before the next wave of opposition forms. But here’s the problem: the opposition isn’t forming because of misinformation. It’s forming because of lived experience. People in Virginia, Texas, and Ohio have seen the traffic, the noise, the strain on the grid when a data center moves in. You can’t unsee that. And you can’t advertise it away.

What Comes Next

Expect the spending to increase. When 100 million dollars doesn’t move the needle, the next ask will be 200 million. And it won’t just be ads — it will be lobbying for preemption laws that strip local governments of their zoning authority. That’s the real endgame: if you can’t win the argument at the town hall, you change the rules so the town hall doesn’t matter. Several states are already considering bills that would classify data centers as ‘critical infrastructure’ and bypass local review.

But the backlash is real, and it’s bipartisan. The NRSC memo proves the GOP sees the danger. The Brown campaign proves the Democrats see the opportunity. And the 61 percent in the Annenberg poll proves the public has made up its mind. The AI industry can spend every dollar it has on ads, but it cannot spend its way out of the fact that Americans don’t want these buildings in their communities. I’ve run the servers. I’ve built the businesses. And I’m telling you: the ads are not the story. The resistance is.
